YYC Pet Recovery Deceased Cat Reports
Since the floods of 2013, citizens who have lost an animal can make a report on the Facebook YYC Pet Recovery page with the hopes that a wider audience will be reached and their loved one found. Likewise, people who have found an animal can post it on there to reunite with owners. While this has been a valuable resource for reuniting people with lost or stolen pets, it is also a place where deceased animals can be posted in the hopes of bringing closure to those who have lost a pet. Beginning in the fall of 2021, Bird Friendly Calgary partnered up with the administrators of YYC Pet Recovery to document how many deceased cats are reported to the site each month. As we continue to gather data, trends will be more apparent but currently we can see that more pets are found deceased in the warmer months than winter. The cause of death is sometimes available with vehicle strikes and predators being the main causes.
